316 Stainless vs Galvanized Hardware

COMPARISON

316 Stainless vs Hot-Dipped Galvanized — Coastal NC Hardware

QUICK ANSWER

On coastal NC docks exposed to salt spray, 316 stainless lasts indefinitely while hot-dipped galvanized fails in 5–7 years. The stainless upgrade costs 3–4× per fastener but eliminates the single most common cause of dock failure.

SIDE-BY-SIDE

Pros, cons, and who each is for

Hot-Dipped Galvanized

PROS

  • +Lower cost (1/3 of stainless)
  • +Widely available
  • +Fine for shielded interior framing

CONS

  • 5–7 year life on saltwater side
  • Orange staining around fasteners
  • Loses head, joint fails
  • Cannot use in splash zone

BEST FOR

Interior framing connections completely shielded from spray (joist hangers, hurricane straps in covered areas).

316 Stainless Steel

PROS

  • +Indefinite life in coastal NC salt
  • +No staining
  • +Specific chloride-pitting resistance (Mo content)
  • +Premium look

CONS

  • 3–4× cost per fastener
  • Slightly softer (can strip if over-torqued)
  • Heavier

BEST FOR

Every deck screw, lag bolt, through-bolt, hinge, cleat, and float connection on the saltwater side.

OUR VERDICT

There is no honest case for galvanized on the saltwater side of a coastal NC dock. The $2,500 spread between galvanized and 316 stainless is roughly the cost of one hardware-replacement service call ten years from now. Spec stainless from day one.

FAQ

Common questions

>

Can I mix stainless and galvanized?

Only if they do not touch. Direct contact accelerates galvanic corrosion of the galvanized piece. Use neoprene washers if connection is unavoidable.
>

What about 304 stainless?

304 lacks molybdenum and will pit in salt spray within 8–12 years. For marine use, only specify 316. The cost difference between 304 and 316 is minimal.
>

How do I tell stainless from galvanized visually?

Stainless has a brushed silver finish; galvanized has a duller, slightly rough zinc coating. After 2–3 years, stainless still looks new; galvanized shows white zinc oxide or beginning rust spots.
