Repair vs Replace Your Dock

COMPARISON

Repair vs Replace — When to Save Your Old Dock

QUICK ANSWER

Repair if structural pilings are sound and repair cost is under 60% of replacement. Replace if pilings show waterline decay, the dock is over 25 years old, or storm damage exceeds 40% of the structure.

OUR VERDICT

Use the 60% rule: if repair quote exceeds 60% of replacement quote, replace. Below 60% with sound pilings, repair. This is the same threshold insurance adjusters apply.

FAQ

Common questions

>

How do I know if my pilings are still good?

Probe each piling at the waterline with a screwdriver. Soft wood indicates internal decay. A piling that gives more than 1/4 inch of resistance is suspect. We do a full probe inspection as part of every repair estimate.
>

Will insurance cover dock replacement?

For storm damage, yes — if you have a marine structures rider. Wear-and-tear and age-related deterioration are not covered. Always document the structure annually with timestamped photos.
>

How long do repaired docks last?

A repair extends life by 5–15 years depending on what was replaced. Re-decking adds 15 years; piling replacement adds 25+. We will tell you honestly whether a repair makes financial sense.
