How to Size a Boat Lift for Your Coastal NC Dock

QUICK ANSWER

Take your boat's dry weight, add fuel and gear weight, then add 25% safety margin. A 22-ft center console with a 250-hp outboard typically needs a 10,000-lb 4-post lift. Under-sizing is the #1 cause of premature lift failure in coastal NC.

The Dry-Weight-Plus-25 formula

Our sizing rule, refined over 30+ years of coastal NC installs:

  1. Start with manufacturer dry weight (boat + engine, no fuel, no gear).
  2. Add fuel at 6.2 lb/gallon — a 60-gallon tank adds 372 lb.
  3. Add gear — anchor, cooler, electronics, fishing tackle. Plan 200–400 lb for a typical fishing setup.
  4. Add 25% safety margin on the total above.

Round up to the next standard lift capacity (4,500 / 7,000 / 10,000 / 13,000 / 16,000 / 24,000 lb).

Common coastal NC boat-to-lift sizing

Boat TypeTypical Lift
Jet ski / PWCPWC lift (1,500 lb)
18–20 ft bay boat7,000 lb 4-post
22–24 ft center console10,000 lb 4-post
26–28 ft sport fish13,000 lb 8-post
30+ ft twin-outboard16,000–24,000 lb 8-post

Why under-sizing fails

An under-sized lift runs its cables and motor at 90%+ of capacity every cycle. Cables fatigue, strands break, motors overheat, and the lift fails in 5–8 years instead of 20+. The marginal cost of stepping up one capacity (e.g., 7,000 to 10,000 lb) is typically $1,200–$2,000 — far less than a replacement.

FAQ

Quick questions

>

What size boat lift do I need for a 24-foot boat?

A 22–24 ft center console with a 250 hp outboard, full fuel, and gear typically needs a 10,000-lb 4-post lift. Always verify with the manufacturer dry weight plus a 25% safety margin.

Can I install a bigger lift later?

You can upgrade to a larger lift, but the pilings and dock framing need to be re-engineered for the higher load. It is almost always cheaper to install the right size from the start.
